"Spring Thaw", new plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Spring Thaw", 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
SOLD

This is the second one from my day at Elbow Falls. I got a letter from a follower asking me how I managed to get the feeling of light streaming across the snow in "Elbow River -Winter Colour". Great question and I thought you might be interested in hearing the answer too. For the snow in the light, I added just a touch of yellow ochre. For the snow shadows, I used a grayed blue-violet (cobalt blue, violet and a touch of yellow ochre to gray). When those two are placed next to each other, the snow in the sun just sparkles. It is simply a matter of contrasts: warm/cool; light/dark; and saturated/unsaturated as well as complementary contrast.
As the snow shadows aren't as important in the painting above, I toned down those contrasts so that you could instead focus on the colour of the water against the snow.

This is another painting done in the early spring at Elbow Falls. It was interesting to see all the different colours in the rocks and water.

"Elbow River -Winter Colour" plein air painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Elbow River -Winter Colour", 9 x 12 plein air oil painting
$250 unframed -click here to purchase

I was lucky enough to catch some of the last of winter's snow along the banks of the Elbow River recently. I found it really exciting to explore the variety of greys in the leafless trees. Subduing the strong colour in the rest of the painting really made them sing.

Enjoy!

"Bragg Creek Shacks", New Plein Air Oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Bragg Creek Shacks", 8 x 10" plein air oil painting
$200 unframed, click here to purchase

This is my latest plein air painting. Ingrid and I went out to Bragg Creek to paint and while our first painting was done in full sun, by the time we got to our second ones, the sky had clouded over and the light became somewhat flat. I was into exploring colourful grays anyway, so this gave me a perfect opportunity. It was actually quite an enjoyable challenge, I hope you enjoy the results!

I also just found out that I was one of the 50 finalists in the FCA Classic Painting Competition! To be selected from 365 other wonderful paintings sure makes me feel great. To see the entries and the finalists, go here.

"Summer Colour" plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Summer Colour", 8 x 10" plein air oil on board

Just took some new work to Swirl Fine Art in ArtCentral and this is one of them. Swirl is a really nice, if not small, gallery full of the most wonderful paintings you can imagine-make sure you have a peek if you are able.
I have some new work to post but it is too dull to take good photos, but I do have several lined up so stay tuned.

My friend Jean posted this on my Facebook page today, and just had to share it with you!

‎"I have to believe that any act of creation executed for love makes glad the heart of God...I have to believe that I, as one created in the image of a Creator, cannot help but create — and that when I do, I am affirming something fundamental deep down in myself that somehow, in ways I cannot comprehend this side of eternity, has its answering antiphon in heaven. I have to believe that beauty is valid and that in a world of slipshod and plastic and hurry, there is a place for something impractical and time consuming and existing only because someone cared enough to bring it into being." -Lanier Ivester on Art House America Blog

I say AMEN to that : )

Have a wonderful day!

"Remembering Arches National Park" mixed media painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Remembering Arches National Park", mixed media and collage, 12 x 16"
SOLD

In the winter time, I often will work from plein air oil paintings I have done to create colourful work in mixed media. This is one such painting. I was trying to capture the incredible reflected light that happens underneath the amazing natural arches in Arches National Park. Beginning with a random sprinkling of collage elements, allows unexpected things to appear and become part of the painting, something that I always enjoy, as it really allows me to be creative.

Enjoy!

"Late Winter's Afternoon" watercolour painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Late Winter's Afternoon", watercolour on 140lb Arches, 12 x 16"
$250 unframed, click here to purchase

I had a wonderful time in Kimberley, BC this past weekend, where I taught a watercolour and fluid acrylic workshop to 10 wonderfully talented women. The above painting was one of the demos that I did for the girls. This is a redo of a watercolour painting that I posted last month, that one featured the element of texture, while this one focuses on exuberant colour. Below are some photos of my girls hard at work.
And this is a class photo with us all showing our best work from the weekend.
The workshop was a blast and I really hope they will invite me back again.  And so does my dear hubby who accompanied me -and was 'forced' to ski some very deep powder at the Kimberley Ski Resort!

Enjoy!
