Another Day at Lake O'Hara

 We hiked all the way up to Lake MacArthur, and I managed to find a good location out of the wind to paint this. The turquoise in the background is actually the lake, as I was looking down on this scene. I have painted up there before, but never with snow on the ground. I loved the way the soft snow led into the angular rocky ridge and the Larch and other Evergreens behind them adding their own texture. Playing with the edges where the snow met the rocks was critical to making the snow 'read'. (Click on the image to see it enlarged)

This is the last painting I did at O'Hara, and also my favorite. I love Lake MacArthur, the largest lake in the O'Hara area, backed by a neat glacier, although it is a bit of a slog to get there as it is quite high up. The water is the deepest turquoise colour I have ever seen, but it is moody as the colour changes with the weather. We had an amazing 4 days there, with no clouds during the day, which made it much easier to paint as there were no cloud shadows to obscure the forms. I will post the rest of the paintings I did there in the next several days.

This is the first painting of day 5. We woke up to fresh snow high in the mountains and significant cloud cover. Half way through this painting I was huddled under my umbrella in a downpour. I stayed and finished it -I can attest that oil and water don't mix, which is a good thing on days like this...
