A Must Read Post!

Hello friends. We weren't able to leave for Utah today as my dear hubby is still quite ill with a cold, so I was able to spent a few hours online and do some research into gouache, as I want to do some studies in that medium while we are away -less messy, quicker and easier to store. A fellow member of the International Plein Air Painters (IPAP) by the name of Larry Seiler is a wonderful artist and instructor, so I went to his blog to get some tips and inspiration for the medium. While searching there, I read his most amazing post that really struck home and was an amazing testimony for the Christian artists' life. If you are an artist, I hope you will read it. He has lots of very good things to say about the cult of celebrity.

Enjoy!

New winter plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Winter's Patterns No 2", 8 x 10" plein air oil on board
$495 framed, free shipping and handling

Another late winter plein air just completed. Unfortunately the days have been cloudy with scattered flurries, but at least the temperatures are warmer. I did this one from the car again due to the wind, and when I tried to go home, I realized my car battery was dead. Luckily I was able to pull over a passing driver to give me a boost after about 10 minutes. Note to self: when car painting, make sure the heater fan is turned off!!

This will hopefully be my last snow plein air of the year -we are headed down to Moab and beautiful points further south this weekend. I am taking my painting gear and I am really excited to paint the wonderful formations and colours of the area. If we are able to get to an internet site, I will post my efforts, or at least some photos to make you jealous! Otherwise I will see you back here after April 16th.

Also, please check out Making a Mark's blog this week. It deals with making your own paintings rather than copying the content of other painters work, and is a 'must read' for all daily painters. Katherine Tyrell's further post on how to make a painting really yours is here.

Enjoy!

New Plein Air Oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Winter's Patterns", 8 x 10" plein air oil painting
$495 framed, free shipping and handling

I am back in the saddle again! This is a new plein air painting, done from my car as the wind during our last chinook was too strong to be painting in. I am SO happy to be back painting in the landscape!! I am happy to say that my solo show at the Leighton Art Centre is going really well and I am getting tons of great feedback. Thanks to all who have gone out to see it :)

New Watercolour Painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Demure", 8 x 12" image, watercolour
12 x 16" double matted $150 plus shipping and handling

This was a demo that I did for my advanced Watermedia class this week, from a model photo I had. The object of the lesson was to teach how to marry the figure and the ground from the first brushstrokes. The colours and values are gradually built up to their final results, letting each stage dry before beginning the next. It is not a very direct way to paint, but the only way I know of to model convincing form with exciting colour.

I am off to teach a weekend watercolour workshop to the Society of Western Canadian Artists in Edmonton. Until Monday then...

Enjoy!

Tuesday

Show was hung today!

And it looks phenomenal, even if I do say so myself! I am so very proud and grateful for this wonderful opportunity to showcase my plein air work to such a wide audience. And the book that goes along with the exhibition, is such a good tie-in. Remember to see a preview of the book here! I am meeting with the teaching staff on Thursday to discuss ideas to share with the multitudes of school children who make field trips to the Centre every day. So much very good energy, I truly am blessed!

Sunday

International Women Celebrate! Show is up!

Yippee!! The International Women Celebrate! collaborative show is up at Ayrspace in Ayr, Ontario. I spoke with some of the artists via Skype this morning, and the show looks fabulous. This is the article from the Kitchener paper, and that is my painting "Yesterday's Memory" at the bottom right of the photo. Hopefully the sales will be good, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Haitian relief efforts. If you are near Kitchener, Ontario you should go and have a look!

New Oil Floral and another SALE painting! by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Flowers and Oranges", oil on canvas, 16 x 20"
$1195.00 framed, free shipping and handling

It was a real joy to paint this floral on an extremely cold and snowy day. I think it captured some of the life and warmth that I was seeking. It was painted on a white, untoned canvas, which meant the colours really had a chance to sing, the only problem was that I had to chase out all those pesky bits of white that were left unpainted.

And now another CLEARANCE SALE painting:

"Roses Return", acrylic, 13 x 16" image size
framed in a contemporary black cube frame with a linen liner
original retail price $450, for a limited time now only $150 plus GST, shipping and handling

Roses Return was painted on a textured support. The roses were 'found' in the colourful washes, and allowed to break forth.
Enjoy!

En Plein Air -One Artist's View is ready to go!

This is my stack of paintings (almost all of them anyway) ready to be delivered to the Leighton Centre tomorrow. Now to figure out how how to fit them all in my car, and then how to hang all of these spread out throughout the rooms of the gallery so they make some kind of sense!
If you are anywhere in the Calgary area during the five week run of the show, I hope you will come by and see the show. I will be signing copies of my new book at the opening as well.
And here is the invitation. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might be interested :)
