Winter Brings New Directions!

"Rae Glacier Abstraction ii", 30x40" acrylic on gallery canvas
$2100

I just love the winter time when it is too cold or miserable to venture outside to paint, as that gives me prolonged studio time to explore ideas away from the actual scene I am trying to interpret.

This is a much larger version of an original 11x14" acrylic and collage painting I did in 2007 during a Gerald Brommer workshop on Line And Shape (see image below). Wow, that was 10 years ago almost to the date!! I always say, and seldom do myself, that it is a great idea to revisit old ideas and to see how far your art has advanced in the interim. At the time I did several quick pencil sketches of PARTS of a photo I took of a hike we were on, and explored each of them in abstraction, choosing to focus on only parts of the scene in each one. I have been interested in adding line as a major element in my work for years, while continuing my interest in shape as a dominant element, which is why I just loved Brommer's workshop! By the way he is an incredible teacher of PAINTING IDEAS, and I highly recommend advanced artists to take a workshop or two with him. He is in his 80's now, so do it quickly if you can :).

In this current attempt, I wanted to focus on texture as well as abstract shape, so I kept the colour more muted. I also kept the element of line as a less dominant element, although it is still present. If you blare all the elements of design the result is a train wreck!
Firstly I drew the large shapes from the original painting onto the canvas with a large sharpie marker, gridding them up so that I maintained the composition. Then I spent some time texturing the large canvas using soft gel, self leveling gel, clear tar gel and gesso, and pressing different textures into the wet mediums and scraping with palette knives, sponges and brushes.
While that was still wet, I flowed on india ink and acrylic inks and let them do their thing.
When all that had dried, I played with the shapes I had drawn, trying to incorporate the random colour and texture that had happened, while still keeping to the spirit of the original.
I found it very useful to have this compositional 'playground' to play within, knowing that if I followed that, I would have a strong painting. Please click on the top image to see it larger and in more detail.

Original "Rae Glacier Abstraction", 11x14" ink, acrylic and collage. Tertiary triadic colour scheme (BV, YO, YG).

For interest sake, and because I hope that my posts will be educational, fun and inspirational for you, I will post the other paintings I did in this series at the time. They are all done on 1/4 sheets of watercolour paper using sharpie markers, india ink, watercolour and acrylic. Obviously the colour schemes are made up -the bottom 4 are all based on analogous colour schemes (another thing I was exploring at the time!) All are sold, so I am REALLY glad I had taken good photos of them :)

This is the first one in the series. Just watercolour and ink.
I think this was the second one. This one has random collage papers placed on a line drawing and then acrylic and watercolour was added, and more line. Some of the lines became trees and rocks. I was going for a V composition which framed everything else.

This is the third one, getting even looser. Here you can see the edges of the random collage papers, some of which were incorporated as objects and some just left to just be.

This was the last one. I wanted to keep the strong abstraction in the cruciform design, yet see how true I could get to representing what was actually in the photo -well, sort of! This was a  really valuable lesson for me!
Enjoy and please feel free to SHARE!!

"A Firm Foundation" mixed media collage by Sharon Lynn Williams

"A Firm Foundation", collage (hand painted papers) and acrylic paint
15x15", $490 framed in gold frame with 2" white border

This is my latest collage painting. I just love the colour scheme of blue-green and yellow-orange! I made all the papers at the recent collage workshop I taught. It is fun to find all sorts of patterns to play with, although many will need to be calmed down with paint glazing in opaques and semi-opaques.

Enjoy!

"From Fall To Winter", mixed media collage by Sharon Lynn Williams

"From Fall To Winter", 12 x 12" collage and acrylic paint
$475 framed, click here to purchase (this painting is currently in the Leighton Art Centre's Annual Members show -check it out!)

I am so far behind in posting my paintings, so am just picking and choosing what to post from my winter's production. While I love to paint in oil on location in the warm weather months, that is a relatively short period of time here in Calgary. I don't really enjoy paintng from photos in oil -it seems too easy to get caught up in all the 'stuff' that is in the photo, and for me it is hard to really connect with the place just from the photo. Now sometimes I can do that if I have taken the photo recently or if it holds a special meaning for me, but usually it is just 'nice stuff'.

From November to May I spend time in my studio just painting whatever inspires me at the moment, and that is when I unleash my creativity. Perhaps that is one reason I look forward to the length of winter here every year! My winter passions go more to the abstract, and I really enjoy mixed media collage, accrylics and now encaustic.

I was having a crisis this morning, thinking that I should probably just do ONE thing, as this is the path so many of my artist friends have taken. But my darling husband reminded me that I am not everyone else, so why should my path look like everyone elses'? Plus he knows me -he knows I would get very bored only doing one thing, and it would make me miserable. I am in the blessed and enviable position that I don't need to rely on income from painting sales to eat. Which is VERY good!! This allows me the freedom to follow my muse, exploring everything about art making. It also helps me be a good teacher as I know how to use most mediums in most styles. I guess I should be happy being a 'jack of all trades', even if it means I am not a master in any. Que up the song "Don't worry, be happy".

I would love to hear your thoughts on the issue of focusing on one thing versus exploring the whole. I promise to respond to each comment.

"Life's Events" mixed media collage demo by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Life's Events", 16 x 16" collage and acrylic
$475 -on gallery wrap canvas, no frame needed -click here to purchase

This is my latest collage painting, and I thought I would share the steps this one went through on its journey.

In the first step, I gathered together relatively neutral hand painted and altered papers, which had been coated on both sides with polymer medium. The illustration board that I used as my support also had several coats of gloss medium on it. Then I randomly arranged the papers, aiming for repetition of line throughout. Then I ironed them down with a tack iron set on high with a silicone sheet (from labels) between the work and the iron.

I continued to add more papers to get a colour theme going and to break up some of the larger shapes. I was going for composition at this stage -a way to guide the eye through out the painting.

I kept turning the painting around to see how it best worked. I then applied some titan buff fluid acrylic paint with a foam roller around the exterior of the painting to keep the interest in the centre, rubbing some of it back while wet.

Lots of time thinking, turning and painting was spent between the last 2 steps! In the end I decided to cut into the design with a solid yellow background, forcing the collage bits to become one unified shape against the background. I added some balck and white deli paper that I had painted through a stencil to get some bold contrast, and painted over a lot of the paer from the initial layer. Adding the stars (taken from some of the original papers) seemed to create a story for the painting. I began to think of life's events as stars, some big, some small, some that stand out and change the path of your life, while others are just small moments in the overall plan of a life. I just love it when the work speaks to me and guides me to the finish. The joy of pure creativity!

I will be teaching a Mixed Media Collage workshop at Swintons Art Supply in Calgary April 11-13. Please click here for the details and to register.

"Products of A Busy Mind", abstract mixed media painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Products Of A Busy Mind", 12 x 12" collage and acrylic
$575 framed, click here to purchase

Finally, new work!! This painting began as an abstract collage in shades of grey, black and white, but I just cannot paint without colour, so I added some papers painted with my favorite colour Quinacridone Gold (I still have some of the original formulation). I varied the temperature of the black by using cool Paynes Grey for some and warmer Carbon black for others. All the papers in this are hand painted by moi. Somewhere along the line, I detected what could be a profile of a face, liked that direction and then it was smooth sailing from there. Once I have an idea of where a piece is going, it is much easier to make the decisions that are needed to bring it to a finish.

Once the faces made their way into the work, I decided to send the painting to the jury for the travelling ASA exhibit this year, and sadly, I just found out that it was rejected. That hurt, and for a few minutes I was really feeling bad about my art, and myself in general -you know how it is... It lasted for about half an hour and then got blasted away by my wonderful friends who cheered me up on Facebook. I'm afraid that I am not very objective about my own work, especially when it is newly birthed. All babies are beautiful -just ask any new mother!!

Onward and upward (I hope) -Enjoy!

Encaustic painting "Iris" and demo this Saturday!

"Iris", 12x12" mixed media encaustic
$495 -click here to purchase

I have been playing around with encaustic since Christmas, and am really enjoying the ride. In this painting I collaged an original watercolour painting onto the cradled board and then made a textured encaustic border for it. It is an interesting combination of implied texture (in the atercolour) with actual texture.

I will be doing an encaustic demonstration tomorrow (Saturday) at Atlantis Fine Framing (4515 Manhattan Rd SE) from 10am to 3:30pm, along with demos by Ken Bourassa and Tracy Proctor. I am honored to be included with such talented encaustic artists, and to take part in the Calgary Artwalk event!

Tuscany Workshop -last day!

"Montigiovi Remembrance", 12x16" oil and collage

I was "playing painting" with great friend and fellow traveller,Lori, the other day after being out painting in the morning. We had made some collage surfaces using old posters that Lori had torn off walls on our journey. Then we went into them with oils, what a blast! I have done this a lot using acrylics, but the oils were so much more fun -easily blended and great opaque through transparent coverage. I will definitely be doing more of this : )

I can't believe it, but the last day of our wonderful workshop has come and gone. We are to be up at 5:45am and will be home at 9pm Calgary time (8 hr time difference)-LONG day!

Here is a watercolour card that I made to thank our wonderful driver, Joe.

Thanks for coming on this journey with me- it has been so fun and rewarding.

Enjoy!

"Autumn Blues" collage and acrylic painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Autumn Blues", 11x11" collage and acrylic painting on board
SOLD

I have loved playing around with tons of stuff this winter!! This began as a demo for a class I was teaching, and then put 'in the pile' for another time. I thought it was a good idea to hit that stack to see what I could come up with, rather than beginning a new painting. You can see the process shots during the workshop here (its the one on the left). If you look at that older post, and compare it with what you see above, can you figure out the changes I made?? Kind of like an artistic 'Where's Waldo' :-P

"Garden Of Earthly Delight", encaustic mixed media painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

Garden Of Earthly Delights, 9x9" encaustic mixed media painting
SOLD

This is another encaustic exploration piece, this time beginning with an image that I shot many years ago in Italy. I altered the image in photoshop, adhered it to the support and then laid wax over it in vertical stips. Then I went back into the image and added oil colour to the statue and leaves. I am amazed how the wax looks like rain coming down. What a cool medium encaustic is!

New Artistic Adventures!!!

"Land, Sea, Air", encaustic mixed media, 12 x 16"

I know I haven't posted in a while, but my have I been busy! A few weeks ago I attended an Encaustic Workshop with Ken Bourassa. We had 2 days to play with wax, and I got hooked. It is amazing what can be done with hot wax, and it is so hard to control -I just love it! This is my first ever encaustic painting, and there is a lot going on in it. I will continue to post my explorations in case you are interested.

"Circus #1", 20 x 20" acrylic and collage mounted on gallery wrap canvas
$400 plus shipping

I began several paintings at a Robert Burridge workshop last summer (the master circus painter), and decided to finish a few of them for a show being held at the Northern Jubilee auditorium through the Alberta Society of Artists. The Edmonton Opera Company is doing Les Contes D'Hoffman, which is an opera based on the circus.  The show will be up until March, so if you are interested in this piece, you will have to wait for it, or pick it up from the show.

"Remembering Arches National Park" mixed media painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Remembering Arches National Park", mixed media and collage, 12 x 16"
SOLD

In the winter time, I often will work from plein air oil paintings I have done to create colourful work in mixed media. This is one such painting. I was trying to capture the incredible reflected light that happens underneath the amazing natural arches in Arches National Park. Beginning with a random sprinkling of collage elements, allows unexpected things to appear and become part of the painting, something that I always enjoy, as it really allows me to be creative.

New Mixed Media Collage Demonstration by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Sunday Stroll", acrylic and collage, 12 x 12"

This is the last demo I did for my workshop, and I took a couple of step-by-step photos to help you see how I got here. To begin with, the palette I used to stain and decorate my papers for all of the workshop demos posted yesterday and today, is a simple one of Green Gold or Azo Green and Quinacridone Magenta, along with Carbon Black and gesso for a white.
We dyed and decorated many pieces of tissue paper using all the combinations of the above colours plus black and white. The ones with the white added become more opaque with the increasing amount of gesso in the mix.

I used my above plein air painting as the impetus for this collage, as I liked the simple shapes. I drew the 5 large shapes on my support with a sharpie marker so I could see them through the transparent collage layers. You can see the lines in step one below.

This was the start. The idea was to keep the 5 shapes separate by assigning each one a specific value and then trying to find papers in that value range. This step has collage only on it.

This was the second step. I have begun to add collage papers to distinguish the value shapes a bit better. There still isn't any paint added at this stage.

Here is the painting as it sits now on my 'observation shelf' in my studio. Since the colours seemed to suggest a rock rather than a bush, I decided to take the painting in that direction. I have changed some of the shapes to add interest, and have added some negative painting to make the weed growth in the lower left corner. I have done some outlining of some shapes with different coloured paint on a rigger brush and have negatively and positively painted trees in the upper third. I think I need to strengthen the linking of the dark value pattern to make it more interesting, and try to figure out if I can live with the shoreline not being more straight. I like the feeling of reflections happening in the 'water' area on the bottom, but maybe that could be stronger. I will post it again if I decide to make any changes to it, but that will have to wait for a rainy day!
By the way, I am teaching 2 plein air workshops coming up- the first on June 4 & 5 and the other June 11 & 12. Let me know if you would like more details.

Enjoy!

Mixed Media Workshop finale... and a painting

At the beginning of the workshop I asked all the participants what they wanted out of their week with me. I combined all their desires and made them into a motto which I posted at the front of the classroom. In the end, they all agreed that they got what they wanted!

This is our class: top l to r -Joanne, Lynda, Michelle, Karen, Debbie, me, Kirsten and Pat. My kids are all holding their favorite painting from the week. It was a blast and I hope to be able to do it again next year. Michelle was the successful bidder for my painting "Gabrielle" from my last post -the silent auction over it was quite vigorous. I am really glad that she got it. I understand that she has some cool plan to hang it from a large metal wall piece -would sure love to see that.

"Spring Bouquet", oil painting from life, 8x6" on 1" thick panel
SOLD

I did this painting before leaving for the the workshop. As the weather has been variably crummy, I decided to not let that stop me from painting from life. These are some of my flowers from my garden, which have managed to miss all the hail storms so far -fingers crossed.

I have decided to paint the flowers from my garden, from life, for the month of August, and put them for sale here on my blog at a really inexpensive price. If people respond and purchase them, I will continue to do smaller than gallery sized paintings (8x10 or larger) and post them for sale, getting a Paypal button and all that good stuff. As this is a market test, if you are interested in purchasing one, please email me and I will make arrangements for the sale and shipping.

Enjoy!
