Plein Air: Fall in the Mountains, by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Rundle Ridge Fall", 9x12" plein air oil
$495 beautifully framed

I had the pleasure of painting in the mountains of Canmore, AB with two of my best painting buddies this week. The fall colours were astounding and the sky cloudless, which made it easier on the artists.

"Quarry Lake Fall", 12x12" plein air oil
$575 beautifully framed

This was actually the first painting of the day. This is called "Little Sister" because it is the lowest of the Three Sisters, but it is the biggest mass-wise of the three.  No wonder I keep getting them confused!

These are my 'partners in crime': Dee Poisson on the left and Patti Dyment on the right. Both are great painters and make me laugh!

Return to Lake O'Hara, and weather!!

"View From Sargeant's Point", 12x12" plein air oil on panel
$575 framed

I had the great pleasure to return to Lake O'Hara in Yoho Provincial Park last week, which is my favorite place to paint on the planet. Unfortunately the weather was not ideal and we arrived in 4" of snow. The above painting was done on our last day as the weather was just beginning to clear.

"Along O'Hara's Shoreline", 9x12" plein air oil on panel
$495 framed

This was the painting I did on our first day. All the peaks were socked in, but the colour in the shore was incredible against all that gray. I was intrigued with the red moss that grew with the yellow-green -don't know why, but it was beautiful!

"Mt. Shaeffer Reflections", 12x12" plein air oil on panel
$575 framed

This was my effort on our third day. I love the way the reflections play on the colour of the lake, with the lake bottom showing up particularly in the areas of dark reflections. Hard to catch at the best of times and extremely challenging when painting plein air. But that's the kind of thing that challenges me and makes me coming back for more.

The first time I went to paint at Lake O'Hara in 2008 it was 25 degrees and sunny and we hiked and painted in our shorts and tee shirts. I have been back 5 more times since then, and haven't had that kind of luck again. Maybe next year...

"A Good Day In The Mountains", oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"A Good Day In The Mountains", 12x12" oil on board
$575 beautifully framed

I did this studio painting this fall from a photo I took at Lake O'Hara. The guy hiking happens to be my dear hubby, who generously helps me carry my stuff up the sides of mountains so that I can paint in the most incredible places. Then he goes off for a hike 'up something' and returns to help me home again. Have I said how incredibly blessed I am?

I am so pleased to announce that I will be on Artists Helping Artists (AHA) Blog Talk Radio on Thursday with my painting buddy that I met in France . We will be sharing about our adventure after Dreama's workshop as we hit the road for some plein air bliss. You don't want to miss it, but if you do, the show is archived on the site so you can catch it at a later time.

Lake O'Hara Paint-out by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Lake O'Hara Splendor", 12x 12" plein air oil on board
SOLD

This September saw my plein air buddies and I painting once again at the magnificent Lake O'Hara in BC. This was my effort on our first day -the sun was out and it was GLORIOUS! I have painted from this place before, but never in such wonderful light. See previous year's efforts in the snow here,  here, and here. This was the first painting to sell at my current show at Fallen Leaf Gallery in Canmore.

"Opabin Lake", 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
Buy with Paypal

Opabin plateau holds the most number of mind blowing painting locations that I have ever seen. This is my first try at this scene, but it won't be my last!

"Larch And Odaray", 12 x 12" plein air oil on board
$575.00 beautifully framed
Buy With Paypal

This was my last painting of the trip as the rain blew in for the next 2 days, and it was just too cold and wet to paint outside, and too dark in the Elizabeth Parker hut. Seems to be the story of our paintouts - half the time it is glorious, and the other half, not so much!
I was really taken by this scene. It seemed to be a battle of beauty between the larch showing off its fall glory and the majestic Mt Odaray in the background.

The las two paintings are still available at Fallen Leaf Gallery in Canmore, and should be there until the end of December -unless one of you grabs it!

Bow Valley Provincial Park Paintout by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Autumn Middle Lake" 12 x 12" plein air oil on board
$575.00 beautifully framed

I was happy to meet my Canmore painting buddy at Bow Valley Provincial park this fall on a glorious but windy day. Both of these paintings were painted within 20 feet of each other, just pointing in a different direction.

"Yamnuska Autumn", 12 x 12" plein air oil on board
$575.00 beautifully framed

The time came for the second painting and the morning haze had burned off leaving a glowing blue sky, but the wind had also picked up quite a bit. I was practically standing in the water for this one, trying to find a spot out of the breeze.

Both of these paintings are currently at Fallen Leaf Gallery in Canmore until the end of the month.

Painting in the Purcells -by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Mt. Sir Donald", 12 x 12" plein air oil
SOLD

This summer Dave and I splurged and took a hellicopter trip into the Purcell Mountain Lodge, just outside of Golden BC. I say splurged because the lodge is a 5 star resort in all manner of ways. The food was magnificent and plentiful, the accomodations luxurious (complete with hot showers and a sauna -unheard of in our usual back country trips) and the views were to die for. There were knowledgeable guides to take hikers far and wide, but for me, the best part was that BC painter Charlie Easton was doing an artist residency there at the same time, so I had someone super to paint with. Because of Charlie, I was allowed to go off and paint to my hearts content, with a radio in case I spotted the resident grizzly bear.

This first painting is my favorite from the trip. It features the famous peak of Mt Sir Donald, the tallest peak in the Purcells. While we were there we were treated to an avalanche spotting coming off the top -no where close to where we were. There is a huge valley just past the trees in the painting (the lodge sits on a plateau), but it makes the view look like the mountains are just coming out of nowhere.

"High Alpine Evening", 9 x 12" plein air oil
$495.00 beautifully framed

I painted this on our first evening at the lodge. I just loved how the colours just popped in the low angled light.

"The Burn", 9 x 12" plein air oil
SOLD

One of our hikes let to this beautiful area that is recovering from a forest fire. I thought the twisted branches of the dead trees played with the silhouettes of the range behind, the burned evergreens that didn't drop their now red needles and the everpresent Fireweed which pops up after such an event.

"Changing Weather", 9 x 12" plein air oil
$200 unframed

Our third day was rainy, but I was able to paint this from the deck of the lodge as the clouds were breaking up and the sun was returning.

"Wonder Falls", 12 x 12" plein air oil
$575.00 beautifully framed

On our last day at the lodge, my hubby joined me for a big hike/paint session. Can you see the tiny line of white at the bottom of the previous painting? That is this waterfall, so you can tell how far a walk it was. What you can't tell is that you have to hike 300m down to the valley floor and 300m up the side of the next mountain to get here (and back again of course!) I was thankful for a chance to rest paint here. The colours of the rock and the moss were electric.

This was a very expensive holiday, but I think it was totally worth every penny.

Bow Lake Artist Residency plein air paintings by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Surveying Paradise", 12x16" plein air oil on Arches oil paper mounted on board
$695 Beautifully FRAMED
Please click here to purchase

I am way behind in posting so I thought I would put all the paintings together that I did while at an Artists Residency at Numtijah Lodge at Bow Lake. Bow Lake is a truly magical place and the lodge has quite a lovely ambiance. I shared this residency with my plein air painting buddy, the talented Patti Dyment -check out her lovely work!!

"Fireweed at Bow Lake", 12 x 12" plein air oil on board
$575 Beautifully FRAMED
Please click here to purchase

The fireweed really put on a show this year and made a lovely forground for Crowfoot Glacier.

"Threatening Rain", 9x12" plein air oil on board
$495 Beautifully FRAMED
Please click here to purchase

We took a short drive from Bow Lake one evening and caught the late sun on some peaks. It was threatening rain, as it did all weekend, but it seems we were blessed as it was raining all around us, but never on us!

"Back Country", 12x9" plein air oil on multimedia artboard mounted on panel
$495 Beautifully FRAMED
Please click here to purchase

This was my last painting for the residency. The sky was overcast and sprinkles came and went. This is not really in the 'back country' as it is at the side of the lake, but the title seemed appropriate. So many wonderful jewels in the Canadian Rockies for hikers to come upon.

Mount Assiniboine Plein Air Painting Trip by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Between Terrapin and Magog", 9x9" plein air oil on board
$295 beautifully framed

In August I had the great adventure of taking a helicopter in to Mount Assiniboine (instead of doing the 24 km hike in with all my gear) to paint with friends for 5 days. Hiking around Lake Magog at Mt. Assiniboine's base takes you to this view -just loved the composition.

"The Towers-Assiniboine NP", 8x10" plein air oil on board
$395 beautifully framed

This is the view of one of the neatest mountain shapes around the area. There was a conveninet creek flowing from the bottom of it that made the neatest entry into the painting. This peak was compelling at many times of the day as the sun moved around it.

"Evening Light -Naiset Huts", 10x8" plein air oil on board
$395 FRAMMED,  click here to purchase

As the light was fading and we were waiting for our friends to cook dinner (we took turns each night) the light was coming through the shadows of the tall evergreens and making a wonderful pattern on the roof of a neighbouring hut. I had about 30 minutes to capture it before it was totally gone. I did it in the "Dreama" style of using a wet transparent underpainting -the best for a quick take on a subject I've found.

"Hillside Wildflowers", 10x8" plein air oil on board
$395 beautifully framed

Along the path on one of our hikes we passed this amazing hillside just covered in all kinds of wildflowers. I returned later to give it a try, and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.

"Totally Absorbed", 8x10" plein air oil on board
not for sale

We were once again at the base of Mt Assiniboine to paint, but the mountain was covered with cloud and I didn't feel like painting it again. (I did make 2 tries at it, but am not too pleased with either of them. I did take photos so who knows, maybe I will give it a go this winter) This is my friend Pat who was, as the title suggests, totally absorbed in her painting.

It was a wonderful time exploring the area, but unfortunately the lovely weather we had for the first 2 days didn't hold out. I think I will go back another time as there is so much beauty to be had for very little effort (unlike O'Hara which involves quite a bit of trekking up mountainsides for the payoffs).

Icefields Parkway Plein Air Painting Trip by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Along The Sunwapta River", 7 x 12" plein air oil on board
$295 beautifully framed

More catching up!! At the end of June I was happy to go on a three day plein air/camping trip with my painting buddy Patti Dyment. We had wonderful weather and quite the adventure. We loved this spot last year, so decided to give it another go. You can see the first one here.

"Receding With Time", 12 x 9" plein air oil on board
$495 beautifully framed, click here to purchase

This is the famous Crowfoot Glacier, which was one of the first sights I went to see when I moved to Alberta in 1978. It was MUCH larger at that time, so I thought I had better immortalize it at it's present size! I loved the J shape and the way the turquoise of the glacier shone through in places.

"Mt. Robertson. 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
$250 unframed, click here to purchase

On our first day out we found an overflow campground that had lots of room in it (It was the Canada Day long weekend, so there were lots of campers around). This mountain was in our view and we just loved the shapes, so we just had to paint it.

"Mt. Athabasca", 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
$495 beautifully framed
After spending a large part of the day trying to capture the magnificence of this wonderful piece of ice sculpture, we decided to camp the night in the parking lot right across the road from it, in order to observe it as the sun went down and came back up. The time for the allen glow was really quick so all we had time for was photos. I think this would look great at 30 x 40", don't you?

"Mt. Andromeda", 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
$495 beautifully framed

This is the peak right next to Mt Athabasca above. You have to understand that these mountains are well over 11,000 feet tall and there isn't anything between the highway and the peaks except for the enormous Athabasca Glacier. This one was really difficult to paint as there were so many facets visible and not as deep a snow field covering them.

"What Lies Beyond", 8 x 8" plein air oil on board
$350 FRAMED, click here to purchase

This is the last painting of the trip. We were winding our way through the mountains and spotted this river which disappeared through a rock canyon. It must go over a falls just beyond our view due to the mist that was soaring up in the distance. It was fun to try to catch the feeling of that hidden power.

Plein Air Oil Paintings from Lake O'Hara by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Reflections -Opabin Plateau, 8 x 10" plein air oil on board
SOLD

OK, it is definitely time to get all the rest of the paintings from 2013 that I haven't taken the time to post, in order to begin fresh in January. These paintings were from our trip to beautiful Lake O'Hara on September 23-26. We have been on this hiking/painting trip at this time slot three times before, and had wonderful sunny, warm weather. This time, that wasn't the case! It was cold and snowy, the first snow of the winter, which made plein air painting a challenge to say the least. The sun did come out on our second day, and I was able to capture the fresh snow in the sunshine. The larches just glowed in the warm light, but I will tell you, I was jumping around trying to stay warm. We were an hour hike up a mountain, so there was nowhere to go to warm up.

"Snow Lifting -Cathedral Mountain", 10 x 8" plein air oil on board
$395 FRAMED, click here to purchase

I painted this just outside our cabin in spurts -as soon as the sun peaked out, between snow falling, I ran outside and did some more on it. By the way, it is the view just outside the Elizabeth Parker Hut where we were staying.

"After The Snow -Lake O'Hara", 8 x 10" plein air oil on board
$395 FRAMED, click here to purchase

On our last day we were determined that we were not going to stay in the cabin all day, after all we had come to paint! I managed to get this in when the clouds were still thickly threatening the white stuff. There is a nice little coffee shop just behind us here, and we did have to run up to sit by the fire from time to time.

"Wiwaxy -Lake O'Hara", 6 x 8" plein air oil on board
$295 FRAMED, click here to purchase

The clouds began to lift at the end of the afternoon, and I was able to paint this quickly before we had to catch our bus to leave. This is the view directly to the left of where I painted the one above.

I just love to paint at Lake O'Hara, and if you would like to see more of my plein air work from there, just see "Lake O'Hara" on the sidebar of my blog, and it should take you to many more paintings. Hopefully we had the one 'bad' weather experience for the next several years. But I have to say, you can really call yourself a plein air painter when you do it in these kind of conditions!

"Vermillion Lakes Fall #2", oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Vermillion Lakes Fall #2", 15 x 30" oil painting on gallery wrap canvas
$1295.00, click here to purchase!

As promised, here is the large studio version of my last post's plein air painting. You will have to click on the photo to see the painting better. It is amazing to me how you get no idea of the scale of a painting on the internet, it just lacks the presence that the real painting has!

I am off in the morning to take a workshop with the fabulous Dreama Tolle Perry on Whitbey Island. You just HAVE to Google her to see her amazing work! I have tried to take a workshop from Dreama for several years now, but as soon as she offers her workshops, they fill up right away. So when she announced them last May, I signed up on the spot, and luckily got in. I hope to learn how she uses her transparent under-paintings and then her sumptuous opaque brushwork on top. She seems to never use more than one stroke of any given colour mixture. I am fortunate enough to have THREE of her original paintings, and the dance of colour and exuberant brushwork just makes me smile! (You can see her influence in the painting above, just by studying her work online). The painting below is one of the ones I bought online from her. Amazing eh?? (You should really see it in person -WAY better!!!)

After Dreama's workshop, Dave and I are heading up to do a 10 day kayak trip in the Queen Charlotte Islands. We are going with 6 good friends on an unguided trip. This is the most rugged camping/trekking I have ever done, so would appreciate your prayers!! I can't wait to see Haida Gwaii, and commune with the ghost of Emily Carr. I am taking my pen and ink and watercolours, so hope to do a bunch of sketches -no room in a small kayak for plein air gear unfortunately. We are to kayak about 120km in total, weather permitting, so I should have great arms when I get back :)

Until June then, enjoy!

"Opabin Waterfall", encaustic painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Opabin Waterfall", 8 x 10"encaustic painting on board
available on auction at DPW beginning at $75, click here to bid

This time I was trying to see how close to my normal oil painting technique I could get using only encaustic paint. It is possible, but it felt like trying to force a wild medium to be something it was not meant to be. I would put on a colour and then just hope that it wouldn't melt away when it was fused. There are about 15 layers of paint in this painting, and I did find many very cool effects. I think that for me, I will continue to explore the more abstract ways of using the medium, allowing it to have its way sometimes; to engage in the beautiful dance of creativity.

"Three Sisters", acrylic painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Three Sisters", 9x 12" acrylic painting
SOLD

I did this acrylic version of the famous Three Sisters in Canmore from a photo I took along the Bow River in late fall. It was interesting doing it in full body acrylic instead of my usual oil paint, and was quite happy with the results. The painting is currently in my show at Gallery 109 in High River.

"Forget-Me-Not Pond" plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Forget-Me-Not Pond", 9 x 12" plein air oil painting on board
SOLD

This is one of my favorite paintings of the year, although the photo doesn't do it justice. I am now unable to shoot my photos outside because of the low angle of the sun, snow and cold. I tried this one in my studio, and even though I have perfect daylight lighting, the glare off the paint doesn't allow for the richness of colour to shine through. I think I will have to make myself one of those photo cubes everyone is raving about. Only question is what kind of spotlight gives the right temperature so that the colours will be true?? Any tips are greatly appreciated!

I came across this great quote today, that I think I will apply to myself as an artist:
“I began see that God didn't make the horse to win at the races, but for his pleasure – to watch it run.” Peter Furler
This gives me great freedom to just paint to the glory of God, and leave the results to Him. Amen!

"Cascade From Canmore", plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Cascade From Canmore", 8 x 10" plein air oil painting
on auction at DPW starting at $80, click here to bid

This is one from the summer that I never got a chance to post. I have always wanted to paint Cascade Mtn as it is one of my favorites. I love the feeling driving towards Banff that the road is going to smack into it, but it turns just before it hits. There was quite a summer haze over it this day, so I had to play around to find out how to show the distance but still keep the awesomeness of the mountain.

"Canoe Meadows Fall" plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Canoe Meadows Fall", 9 x 12" plein air oil on board
$495 beautifully framed

I did this painting after the t-pee on my Kananaskis paintout. It was interesting because the trees in the foothills had gone brown due to lack of rain in August and September, but as soon as we turned into K Country the colour bounced back to vibrant yellows and oranges.
I have been very busy since my daughter moved back home from Ontario. I am thrilled that she is living with us until she finds herself an apartment, but my days are more full. I never got a chance to post the last of my plein air's before the snow hit, so will do so this week.

"Temple Mountain", plein air oil painting by Sharon Lynn Williams

"Temple Mountain", 8 x 6" plein air oil on board
SOLD

This is the second painting from my Jasper painting trip. This is my husband's favorite mountain in Banff National Park- at 12000 ft it is a difficult climb, which he had done on several occasions. This view is from Hubert Lake. There were people swimming in the lake while we were there, and it sure looked tempting.
