New Watermedia Landscape Workshop Coming Up

"Coastal Colour", 12 x 16" fluid acrylic on wc paper
SOLD

This excerpt is from the course description: “Love the fluid look of gloriously puddled colour that only watermedia can give? Want to add opaque media (gouache or opaque acrylic) to enhance a transparent approach? Come and experience the various elements of watermedia painting using a structured learning style with lots of demonstrations and individual one-in-one time. The class will have an emphasis on brush handling, paint application techniques, edge control and colour theory. We will also be working towards helping you to define your individual painting style.”
The workshop runs from 10am to 3:30pm each day on January 25, 26, 27, 30 & 31 –that is a Wed through Friday, then Monday and Tuesday. We have a large, very bright classroom at the Erlton Campus of Chinook Learning Services here in Calgary, which is off MacLeod Trail S and 25 St SW. If you need a ‘kick’ to get back to your painting, I hope you will join me! There are lots of places to stay here right near the venue, so if you are from out of town, I hope you will consider coming here for the workshop. And on the weekend you can visit beautiful Banff National Park as a bonus!
You can register online at http://www.chinooklearningservices.com/ContEd/AdultCourses/WatermediaLandscapes.html or call Chinook Learning Services at 777-7224. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.

Best wishes for an artful New Year!

More Scotland paintings!

"Water Lily", watercolour, 10.25 x 10.25"
This is my favorite of my Scotland paintings -probably because it is a subject I feel comfortable painting! It is done in liftable, granulating colours, which really give it a nice feeling.

"Anstruther Harbour -Scotland", watercolour, 15 x 22"
It was a task to simplify this very complicated scene. I think it turned out ok in the end, but I did have to go back into it to spruce it up once I got home. Plus a seagull crapped on my sky and it just would not lift off, so I had to paint over the watercolour sky in casein. The joys of plein air!!

"Crail Cliff", watercolour, 7 x 11"
This cliffside was covered with heather, and I tried to capture the riot of colour without getting hung up in the detail.

"Johnie Do's Pulpit", watercolour, 10 x 14"
This is a neat rock formation sticking out just off shore. It is full of interesting local history, as you can tell by the name. It was interesting painting the surf as that is something that I have very little experience with. Do you know that waves never look the same way twice?

I have a couple more paintings that need to be finished, and perhaps I will post those later. I find it is kind of hard to get enthused about them at this point. I guess I should have a look through my Scotland photos so I can relive the moments.

Thank you to all of you who took the time to write to say you really liked the paintings in my last post, and to others who wrote to say that they are glad that I posted some that I wasn't crazy about. I am trying to keep it 'real' here on my blog, and it is very real for artists to produce paintings that aren't great all the time! Your kind comments really lifted my spirits :)

Enjoy!

To purchase these, or commission your own painting, please email me.

Monday

You're Invited!

This Wednesday from noon to 1pm I will be hosting a 'take-a-peak' event of my very wonderful and talented students' work this year. The location is Rosscarrock Elementary School, 1406 - 40St SW (2 blocks west of 37 St between Bow Trail and 17 Ave, just west of Westbrook Mall)-please enter by the south doors and proceed down the hallway to the last door on the right. To entice you and to make it more fun for us, we will be hosting a free potluck lunch as well. I had 62 students in all year watercolour and watermedia classes this year, and I expect about half of them to be present to show you their work and to talk to you about the classes. This will be of interest to anyone who is interested in taking my classes, or to any art student or art admirer in general. Most work will be available for sale, so if you are interested, please let me know.
Hope to see you there!
