Pen & Ink & Watercolour Sketch by Sharon Lynn Williams

Sketch done at Smith Rock in SW Oregon, 4x6"

I only had a chance to do one sketch so far on this trip. We found this location in a Discover Oregon book, and good thing too, we would have passed it by as it didn't look like much from the road. People come from all around the world to scale these huge vertical cliffs.
If you like the idea of making quick travel sketches for your memoirs or to get info for later paintings, why don't you join me for my upcoming Plein Air Quick Sketching Workshop on June 8. All the info and registration cart is on my website at www.sharonlynnwilliams.com under the workshops tab.
Hope to see you there!
Enjoy 😄

Sunday

Tuscany Workshop -day 7

Today we painted the view up to the medieval town of Montigiovi. This is my pen & ink & watercolor sketch, incorporating many layers to get the dark contrast I love. In case you are interested, I have included the unpainted ink sketch below:

Here is a photo of the town so you can see what I did:

Enjoy!

Saturday

More plein air w/c sketches

I really took 'Liberty' with this sketch -the cows were 1/4 mile away, the mountains are 50 miles further than I have shown them here, the windswept trees I took from a view to my left and the farm building from a view to my right. The joy of plein air painting is that you can make things the way you 'wished' they were!
This is my last sketch from Beaverlodge. I was intrigued by the shadows cast on the tin roof of the old chicken coup and the field of dandelions in front. The workshop was a great time and this area of northern Alberta is fascinating. I thank the kind artists of the area for making it possible for me to come to paint with them.
Enjoy!

Friday

New pen & ink & W/C sketches

These are two of the pen and ink and watercolour sketches that I did while teaching my Plein Air Workshop for the McNaught Preservation Society in Beaverlodge, Alberta. I really like the second one in particular. I have never painted a cemetery before, but the wispy clouds reminded me of the spirits of those who died a long time ago.
Enjoy!

The View Up Waterton Lake

watercolour and ink sketch, 4x6"
This is the last sketch from my Waterton trip. I painted this on the way down from Bertha Falls, while I waited for my hubby to hike up to Bertha Lake. I was just too pooped to join him for another 2 hours of steep climbing. He says this is a hike I shouldn't have missed, but there is always next time.
Enjoy!

Thursday

Mt. Anderson -Waterton

watercolour and ink sketch, 4x6"
This one was begun in the car at Red Rock Canyon waiting for a sudden rain shower to pass. By the time I had finished, the sun was out again, so I put in a bit of blue sky!
Enjoy!

Wednesday

Blackiston Creek

ink and watercolour sketch, 4x6"
This was done from a view point along the Red Rock Canyon Road. The mountains in Waterton are very different from the Banff/Kananaskis ones as they are so full of colour. The quickly moving clouds presented a challenge even for this quick study. Those familiar with Waterton, know that it can be really windy here.
Enjoy!

Monday

Cameron Falls

watercolour and ink sketch, 4x6"
We just got back from an absolutely glorious camping weekend in Waterton National Park. I did several small on site ink and watercolour sketches there and will be posting them for the next few days. This is one I did of a wonderful waterfall right in town -no hiking! What a change...

Sunday

Red Tulips -sketch

watercolour and ink, 4 x 6"
This is a second sketch done for my class yesterday. These are quick (maximum of about 20 minutes) sketches done with the ink outline preceeding the watercolour washes. Quite fun and very fast and friendly.
I am about to board the Celebrity Mercury cruise ship for a one week cruise to Alaska with my Mom. We are really looking forward to it. I have taken my paints (watercolours and oils) and as long as the airport doesn't confiscate them, I plan to paint on board. I will try to post my efforts if possible during the week, but am not sure that I will be able to. So if you don't see this post being updatted this week, I will post everything when I get back on the 23rd.
Bon Voyage!

Saturday

Sunshine at Last! -sketch

watercolour and ink, 4x6"
This is one of the quick sketches that I did today at the Leighton Centre for my plein air class. It was so nice to see the sun again after all this rain, and it didn't start to spit until the class was over.
Enjoy!

Monday

Summer Light

ink and watercolour sketch, 4 x 6"
This is another of the sketches I made at the workshop. The photo reference didn't have this indication of light, but I wanted it there!
My studio is dry now, all that remains is to move everything back in and unpack it all again...yuck. With all the rain we have been having, it would have been nice to be working in it.
Enjoy!

Saturday

Ink and watercolour sketch 1

"Above Elbow Falls", 4x6", ink & watercolour sketch

This is one of the demo sketches I did today for my plein air - ink and watercolour quick sketch workshop at the Leighton Centre. As it happens, it continued to pour today so we had to work inside from photographs. Bummer -even the rain barrel outside the room had waves in it it was so windy! But the class seemed to love it anyways and everyone did great work. This is a great technique for quick watercolour sketches (30 min maximum) that everyone can do. One lady in the class had never picked up a brush before and she did a couple of amazing sketches.
I will post another one tomorrow.
Enjoy!
